PENTECOST 11 - Philippians 2:1-11; Mark 8:27-37

Who we consider Jesus to be informs our idea as to what being a follower of Jesus means and what is expect of those call themselves by his name, as Christians? In Jesus' day, some thought he was a deluded fool or a dangerous deceiver who needed to be stopped at all costs. Others considered Jesus to be a prophet like those of the Hebrew scriptures, bringing a word from God to them. This message was one of radical inclusion with mutual love and support. Jesus expected his followers to live with other people in mind, and to love those who could do nothing for them in return. He called them to love even their enemies. It might have us wondering how to live to such a high standard. Others considered Jesus to be the Son of God bringing not just a message of good behaviour but an invitation to be transformed in character by the power of God so living a selfless life of service to others would become natural. Who do you say that Jesus is and what are the implications of that belief?
