Working through the Hebrew Bible requires that we see what it is about God that the ancient Israelites discovered that is distinct from what everyone else assumed. All the flood narratives begin with the gods being angry at humans, but it's the Israelite version that has God saying that such a thing will never happen again. All the gods of that time period demanded loyalty and faithfulness of their people, but Abraham perceived Yahweh's promise to be faithful to him and his descendants.
