As we begin the liturgical season of Epiphany, let's approach the next eight weeks as though we were learning about Jesus for the first time. It's so easy to read the stories of Jesus's life when we already know how it turns out, so it takes deliberate effort to reset our perspective and imagine what we would learn from Jesus and what we could know about Jesus as his ministry unfolds from the start.
Today's emphasis is on his baptism. If we were there, what would we have noticed? How would we have responded? And what would we do next?
As Rev Derwyn mentions in the sermon video, the four Gospel accounts of the baptism of Jesus are found here:
- Mark 1:2-11
- Luke 3:2b-22
- Matthew 3:1-17
- John 1:19-34
It would be good to look at these side-by-side to see the observations he makes in the sermon. A great idea is to copy and paste the text onto one sheet of paper so that you can easily see the passages to compare them together. Check out the website www.biblegateway.com and select the New Revised Standard Version to see the same references Rev Derwyn referred to.
