Rev Margaret encourages us to consider the events of the first Good Friday as displaying the various ways we react when things do not go the way we wish. The human tendency is to scrabble for self-preservation or even advantage, often at the expense of our stated intentions, society’s laws, or the guidelines of our faith. We respond to adversity with fear and aggression that lead us to fight or flee, offer bribes or accept them, condone cruelty, deny justice, and use or abuse others. Jesus shows us another way: to trust in the goodness of God, refrain from lashing out, threatening, cursing, or losing control of ourselves. And in doing so Jesus demonstrates for us the character of our Father in heaven.
