PENTECOST 5 - Genesis 22:1-120; Matthew 10:40-42

It is hard to even think of God testing Abraham by asking him to offer his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Reverend Margaret explains the request as God wanting to see if Abraham was committed to him for who he was or for what he had provided Abraham over the years and promised concerning the future. Abraham is willing to jeopardize God's promises about the future by killing his son just because God asked it of him. Abraham demonstrates to God and to himself that he honours God for God’s self not just for what God can do for him. Can we too say that we want God for God’s self and not for what God can do for us now and in the future?
